Inspire the Future Grant 2023Austin ISD Dyslexia/504Elevate training and credentials for bilingual dyslexia interventionistsThe Austin Ed Fund grant would provide an opportunity to provide enhanced training to bilingual dyslexia interventionists who serve emergent bilingual students in Spanish resulting in appropriate advanced credentialing related to dyslexia: The Certified Academic Language Practitioner. Participants would attend training, complete advanced studies of dyslexia and related disorders, and receive supervision of lesson fidelity and delivery through one school year. Successful completion of the program would allow participants to take the ALTA CALP exam leading to advanced certification.$10,000 Innovative Teaching
Inspire the Future Grant 2023Austin ISD EquityCampus Equity Advocates TeamsThe Campus Equity Advocate Team (CEAT) will support their campus peers on addressing equity challenges such as discriminatory incidents, microaggressions and exclusionary acts with regard to gender identity, religion, ethnicity and other human differences that affect student and staff belonging, well-being, and success. Inspire the Future Grant 2023Austin ISD Multilingual DepartmentTamil/Telugu Afterschool ProgramCultural diversity and school culture are important for developing inclusivity and school pride. This is an opportunity for a majority West Austin campus to provide language support to a newcomer population not often served. If funded, this proposal will enhance the L1 of Tamil and Telugu speaking students at Selected Elementary School. Research on bilingualism suggests that. the more skilled the individual is in the first language (Tamil and Telugu), the faster he/she will learn a second language (English). Parents want their children to be bilingual and research shows that being bilingual affects the brain in many ways. One effect is increasing neural plasticity, or the ability of the brain's neural networks to reorganize and grow with time.$10,000 Innovative Teaching
Inspire the Future Grant 2023Austin ISD Multilingual DepartmentSewing Friendships: A Sewing + ESL Program for Afghan Mothers of AISD studentsThis grant will support a biweekly sewing group for mothers of Afghan refugee students in AISD. Community building and ESL activities will be built-in to group meetings to facilitate conversation, shared experience and friendship building. Through this program, we hope to help build stronger community bonds throughout the AISD refugee population by providing a safe and empowering space for women to work together as well as introduce new, exciting cross cultural experiences to the broader AISD/Austin community.$6,000 Innovative Teaching

Inspire the Future Grant 2023Austin ISD Special EducationImproving Access, Inclusion, and Vocational Skill Building with 3D PrintingThis project involves using 3D printing technology to produce keyguards for our AAC users who have difficulty with fine motor and visual skills which impede their ability to access their communication devices, thereby improving their ability to communicate, access, and participate in their education. This technology would also allow us to create various other adapted materials to support our special education students with physical limitations to enable them to more fully participate in their class and school activities. Part of this project entails partnering with a Title I high school CTE class to help create some of these materials, with the goal of helping build student interest and skills in both engineering/STEM and special education/inclusion.$10,000 Innovative Teaching
Inspire the Future Grant 2023Austin ISD STEMComing to Our Senses on the Path of Least Resistance'This project will create an outdoor Mindfulness Sensory Path to help students integrate sensory experiences, calm and/or stimulate their nervous systems in healthy, therapeutic ways, and enable them to find the mental and physical balance to perform better in academic and social settings. The path will incorporate a variety of natural textured surfaces such as smooth pebbles, wood grain, grass, bark, clay, limestone, sand, and granite surrounded by drought-tolerant native plants, including Gregg's mistflower, frogfruit, bamboo muhly, inland sea oats, and fountain grass. This area would benefit everyone who visited, but it would be especially therapeutic for students with nervous system dysregulation. The installation would incorporate a Mindfulness Sensory Path with educational signage encouraging the user to stop and feel plant textures or notice colors, smells, and sounds, essentially building awareness of their internal and external states of being. Grant funds would also cover ecotherapy trainings and community outreach.$9,590 Student Wellbeing

Inspire the Future Grant 2023Crockett Early College High SchoolBallet Folklorico de CrockettBallet Folklórico means "dances of the people" and reflects traditions, cultures, and beliefs that can be traced all the way back to ceremonial dances of Indigenous peoples. The style and movements of Ballet Folklórico incorporate many traditional dance techniques from Mexico's different regions, with each dance telling a beautiful story of its people, both past and present. This Austin Ed Fund Grant would support the beginnings of a sustainable Ballet Folklórico student group that would help to build community and a sense of belonging on our high school campus by tapping into the cultural assets that students bring with them to school each day. Our population is 73% Hispanic and so this group would not only benefit the dancers and their families, but performances would also be an opportunity to connect as a school community around these traditional cultural dances.$10,000 Student Wellbeing

Currently our school has no maps larger than a poster, and the few globes we have are sadly outdated. This goal of this project is to spark the curiosity and imagination of students from diverse backgrounds through the use of large-scale, detailed maps and corresponding daily hands-on mini-lessons. Social Studies is about the people, places and events that have shaped our society. Program components include two museum education trips, self-awareness activities, artist talks, student activity sessions, class projects, parenting education, parent-child engagement activities and a family event. This project will create 43 peace area kits for 43 classrooms at our Elementary Campus. This includes all homeroom classrooms, special education classrooms, and essential area classrooms. These peace area kits, paired with lessons for implementation, will help teachers co-create a classroom community that keeps students and their emotional wellbeing at the center in order to get their brains ready for learning.$3,226 Student Wellbeing

The program's primary objectives encompass recruiting, training, retaining, and facilitating the placement of participants in skilled trade careers. For Cohort #2, the program will incorporate both returning participants and newcomers who are in the initial stages of discovering skilled trades.$2,500 Innovative Teaching
Inspire the Future Grant 2023Navarro Early College High SchoolEmpowering Education: Enhancing College Access for Students of Color and Parental EngagementOur ECHS has a robust set of offerings for students that can link them to continuing education and to the world of work, including P-Tech, many CTE programs, AP classes, and Dual Credit and Early College programs with Austin Community College. Last year we began a focused program to educate parents and students about these opportunities to increase their awareness, interest and understanding of Early College programs. This summer, the number of students who participated in our Summer Bridge Camp for freshmen entering ECHS tripled from the prior year! Inclusion education advocates for students with disabilities to learn alongside their peers without disabilities. To create a truly inclusive model, it is important for students without disabilities to also learn the skills and participate in the sports available to students with disabilities. By implementing this approach, we aim to foster a supportive and inclusive environment that benefits all students while teaching them how to advocate for themselves and each other, develop empathy, and create an environment where all abilities are welcomed and celebrated.$3,400 Student Wellbeing

The inquiry based-investigations will be done using non-colored substrates that will release a colored or fluorescent product when they are exposed to an enzyme. The analysis will be semi-quantitative and quantitative. The semi-quantitative analysis will be done via the degree of intensity of fluorescence released by a fluorescent product. The quantitative analysis will be done via absorbance of the colored product by colorimetry. In both type of analysis, students will prepare a set of standard solutions of known concentration. One of the overarching goals of this class is to sustain interest and enthusiasm for STEM related fields which often starts to decline in girls this age. The curriculum includes learning the fundamentals of computational thinking which lays the groundwork for successful matriculation in future computer science and/or engineering classes. This year, we hope to provide each 7th grade student with a Micro:bit microcontroller to be used in their STEM class. These powerful little programmable devices have several built-in sensors including light, temperature, accelerometer, LED, and bluetooth capabilities. Students can use these functions in a wide variety of computational and creative design applications including science experiments, engineering challenges, and data collection and analysis.
